Hamas & Democracy: Infinite Loop Hole
What if Hamas did not participate in elections, and instead they took over the government by force. Then the world (US, Europe, and Gulf countries) will freeze their funding to the new government and Israel will have the green light to do a full attack on the Palestinian militia Hamas.
But that is not the track Hamas chose, what they chose was the game of democracy and politics. With winning the most seats of the Palestinian parliament, now they have the power and most of all the world recognition.
I don’t know if you knew this, but Hamas leader just met with the Saudi about increasing the fund incase of US and Europe freezing help support, and the result of that meeting was “positive”.
US & Europe help supports rely on Hamas decision regarding recognition of Israel as a country and sovereignty. But then, once again, Hamas chose the loop hole to get out of this dilemma, which is Democracy.
Hamas published a draft of its government program on its website on Saturday. The fifth article in the program says: “The question of recognizing Israel is not the jurisdiction of one faction, nor the government, but a decision for the Palestinian people.”
Handing the issue over to a popular referendum would neatly disengage Hamas from being labeled as a hard-line movement that refuses to recognize Israel on ideological grounds.
But any referendum would leave the US and the EU with little choice but to resume funding the Palestinians, regardless of the outcome of a vote, because America and Europe have always pledged not to punish the Palestinian people and neither the outcome from the democracy practice.
