France probes Bin Laden death claim

According to news wires, Bin Laden is dead. Anyway, here is the story:

France’s Defence Ministry says it cannot confirm leaked reports Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden died of typhoid last month.

The French regional newspaper, L’Est Republicain, has quoted an unconfirmed French secret service report as saying Saudi Arabia is convinced Bin Laden is dead.

A French newspaper says the information comes from meetings between French and Saudi intelligence officials.

It says Saudi officials quoted a usually reliable source in a secret briefing.

“The information gathered by the Saudis indicates that the head of Al Qaeda was a victim while he was in Pakistan on August 23, 2006, of a very serious case of typhoid, which led to a partial paralysis of his internal organs,” the document said.

The information has reportedly been shown to top French Government ministers, President Jacques Chirac and Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin.

The report, stamped with a “confidential defence” label and the initials of the French secret service, says Saudi Arabia first heard the information on September 4 and is waiting for more details before making an official announcement.

The Pakistani Government says no foreign government had shared information that would back up the report of Bin Laden’s death.

French intelligence sources are investigating who leaked what appears to be a genuine secret document.
